After a hiatus of almost 2 years I return to keep you posted of the happenings on the Country Capers Radio Show and news and thoughts about what is happening in Gippsland.

The radio program is still scheduled on alternate Saturday evenings but now runs for 2 hours and commences an hour later at 10pm. Not a good propostion for those who can’t stay up late but that’s the deal unfortunately.

While I am here, KA sent me this link of a You tube video. A new direction in musical instrument technology. I found the video interesting and enjoyable but also reinforced the idea that technology is leaping far ahead of my ability to make use of it. I have enough to do with daily chores and trying to master texting on the phone and other things that are important to me let alone trying to keep up with the new fangled gadgets.

Hope to catch up with you soon

Cheers

North Coast songbird Clelia Adams is the sole Aussie in contention for the 2008/2009 European Country Music Association (ECMA) Annual Awards – in no less than three categories!

Clelia is a finalist in 2008 Song of the Year with her own composition, Wildflowers, the title track of her current album; 2008 Artist of the Year; and 2008 Female Vocalist of the Year.

It’s a good thing for Alan Jackson and Brad Paisley that Clelia wasn’t eligible for the Male Vocalist of the Year category, as Adam Harvey once said of Sara Storer at the Golden Guitar Awards when Sara scored her record haul of seven Golden Guitars.

Clelia was over the moon to receive the good news via email from Europe, where songs from her current album Wildflowers and its predecessor, Heartbeat Highway, have consistently dominated the ECMA charts in recent years.

“It’s accolades such as this that make me realise why I do this whole crazy thing,” Clelia said. Radio programmers right around Europe/NZ/Australia have been so supportive of my songs, I can’t thank them enough. For this little Aussie who’s out there doing it, you have my wholehearted and most sincere gratitude.”

Voting in these awards is only permitted by current ECMA members and reporters and begins on July 4. These are the nominees for results and airplay throughout 2008 – and not 2009. To find out more about the awards, visit the ECMA website www.europeancma.com and to find out more about Clelia, visit www.cleliaadams.com

Some six years after his death, Aussie country music legend Slim Dusty could be about to notch up another chart hit.

An unreleased recording by the singer, who died in 2003, has been discovered by his wife Joy McKean and will be included on a coming Slim Dusty compilation album.

Give Me Room was written by one of Dusty’s favourite songwriters, John Dohling, and is believed to have been recorded at his home studio sometime in 1997.

Members of his Travelling Country Band played on the recording, which was completed and digitally mastered by Don Bartley.

It will be included on an upcoming 80-song Slim Dusty trucking collection titled Sittin’ on 80, which will be released through EMI on July 24.

‘Slim Dusty is one of the most important artists in the history of EMI Music Australia,’ EMI Music Australasia chairman Mark Poston said.
‘He sits in the upper vanguard of artists alongside The Beatles, Sinatra and The Beach Boys as part of our incredible history – so a new track is a huge deal for us and his legions of fans.’

Country Capers Program Notes 6 June 2009.

Down at the Tarago Reservoir is a visitors park and in the gardens is this golden banksia

The calendar marks the first of June as the first day of winter and it looks as if it wants to set in, in the next few days. The days are noticeably shorter and there have been a few mornings with the hint of a frost. It has been good to bask in the last throes of autumn and the lovely warm days we have had this week. Interestingly, I thought that the deciduous trees turned their colours and lost their leaves late this year, having done so from about Anzac Day.
My neighbour, George has been slowed up over the last few weeks with some bad health but the sun got him up and out and getting his wood sorted for the cooler weather to come.
The mountain ducks have returned and as you drive around the farm it appears as if there is a pair in each paddock. I don’t know if they are just following me around or if there is actually quite a number around. One morning a pair were moseying around and were joined by another solitary duck, swooping low and then bringing its wings to an upright position and with a couple of flaps came to a running stop much to the annoyance of the existing pair. The drake took a running leap and chased the intruder away who took to the air. Later, and over the next few days I noticed this solitary duck in his own paddock and always by itself. It must have lost its partner. I wonder where ducks go to find a friend? Anyways, I have since noticed that he is spending more time pal’ ling up with the other set.

Just a reminder, you can go and see Terry and Jenny together with Keith Jamieson and Alisha Smith in concert at the Moe RSL on June 27th from 8pm. It was only a short time ago that The Soldier and His Banjo – a song drawn from a photo, was released. The Bennetts released their third album, Songs of Our Land. Individual songs from the album have been recognised with a TIARA award in January, The Gidgee Bush Ballad Award in December ’08, the Stan Coster Memorial Award in January. For more details phone 03-5127-1007.

Also, I heard on the lines that Reg Poole and Owen Blundell are heading out to the Traralgon Bowls Club soon. Check your local guides or the venue for more details.

Farewells to Some Special Friends

At times you may have described her as mad as a hatter, but she always got a good laugh. I’m talking about Rita Schneider, sister of yodeller, Mary and eintertainer in her own right, who died on March 28, 2009 at 81 years of age.

Rita began her entertaining career with sister, Mary in Brisbane in 1945 on Australia’s Amateur Hour. She appeared on the Bob Dyer and Jack Davey radio shows as well as appearances on shows with Graham Kennedy, Barry Crocker, Bobby Limb and Smoky Dawson.

In recent years she released a series of wonderful comedy CD’s.

Earlier this week Victoria held a state funeral for the respected actor, Charles ‘Bud’ Tingwell.

Whenever I heard the lovely measured tones of Bud Tingwell on the radio, it always gave me the feeling that I was listening to a wise gentleman, whose warmth and generosity elevated your spirits.

Over the past two years multi-award winning artists Beccy Cole, Sara Storer and Gina Jeffreys have toured together as the Songbirds. Hailed as the must see country concert to see, Australian audiences have enjoyed the hits from three of the most beautiful individual voices on stage and were treated to some very special “trio” performances of songs chosen by the girls from their own album collections.
After loads of fan requests from around the country the three long time mates have for the very first time recorded a special concert so that we can re live on DVD time and time again.
This DVD was recorded in Tamworth on January 22, 2009 at the Tamworth Regional Entertainment Centre and also features performances from Troy Cassar-Daley, Kasey Chambers and John Williamson.

Songbirds on DVD

“What I love about the Songbirds is that it’s a great representation of what a good show is.. and they’re all hot!” Troy Cassar-Daley

“Gina is the beautiful Lyre bird, putting on a show, Beccy is the whip bird, whipping them all into shape and Sara’s the Butcher bird with that beautiful Australian voice..” John Williamson

“I watched the whole show and couldn’t wait to get up there and join them, I just loved it..” Kasey Chambers

Country Capers Program Notes.
April 11, 2009

To reach the age of 75 years is a special event and so I couldn’t miss the opportunity of wishing the ‘Professor’ a happy birthday for the 9th April. Over the last year or so he has shared with me many stories. Of particular interest was the many old techniques he learned as a plumber all those years ago, skills which are no longer used such as using molten lead to caulk cast iron pipes and telling me about the properties of, if I remember correctly, fullers paste, a substance made of linseed oil and something else. (Gee, my memory is getting bad. I’m going to visit the prof this afternoon, I had better take a notepad).

However my favourite story is when as a young plumbing apprentice, in the workshop where he worked, they bent steel boiler pipe in a forge. The pipe was filled with sand to retain the heat and with the use of a large table with pegs to guide the accuracy of the bend, heat from the forge and muscle of several men the tube was bent to the desired shape.

In the process of manipulating the pipe in and around the workshop, the manhandled pipe strayed out onto the road way and at times also into the path of the trams which had to stop to make way for the men and their pipe. Take care boys, watch for the electric wire above the tram car.

It all leaves me to recall a British film called “The Plank”. No words required, it was played usually on the ABC for Christmas.
